What can I say … I love it when a hunge turns into a big fat bulls eye!!!
Not so long ago I posted Moonchild’s first video with an announcement that there was a large probability they were going to hit us up with something good.
I am just done streaming and I have to say Moonchild truly delivered. Actually good is an understatement cause “Be Free” is a truly exceptional predominantly jazz infused gem that took me by surprise. This album is not just a musical effort to release some cool tracks. This is truly excellent musicianship. I am aware of the fact that all the band members studied Jazz performance at USC, but in my opinion that is no guarantee that you happen to develop great taste in music during that proces. In this case Andris Mattson, Amber Navran & Max Byrk (a.k.a. Moonchild) seem to be charmed.
Before I started blogging for the Strangefruitmusicblog and had to broaden my musical horizon with the latest in funk, electronic and future soul … nu soul and jazz was the only kind of music I use to regularly listen to. After so many years of listening to anything but Jazz, “Be Free” feels like opening a door and crying out “honey I am home”!!
I made a conscious decision to shy away from technical music terms and detailed descriptions. Simply because I want to write reviews for music loverz and addicts not music critics. But on a technical tip … all the tracks are completely finished, no loose ends, perfectly polished. Without sounding way to experimental there are some amazing jazzy musical layers in there that will give you goosebumps, if you are open to it. But the cool thing is that despite all the musical technique and the obvious correct way to create a jazz track that went into this album, “Be Free” doesn’t have that stiff experimental jazz thang going on or stiff anything else for that matter. “Be Free” sounds absolutely free and effortless and accessible. This release was not just created, it was crafted. Just stream below … you’ll feel what I am getting at.
Believe it or not for Moonchild this release is only the beginning and after streaming, I know you would want to stay in the know. They have a new video coming out pretty soon and are working on a new website and such. For more detailed information you can sign up for the Moonchild newsletter here …
